Methodology: how we calculate your net salary in Switzerland
This page explains what our calculators do, where the figures come from, how we keep them current and what the estimate does not cover. It is the site's editorial policy.
What the calculator computes
- Social security paid by the employee: AHV 4.35%, IV 0.70%, EO 0.25%, unemployment insurance 1.1% up to CHF 148,200 of annual salary.
- Occupational pension (BVG): age-related retirement credit on the coordinated salary, with the employee share at the legal minimum.
- Non-occupational accident insurance: an average rate, which varies by employer.
- Taxes: direct federal tax, cantonal and municipal tax for your canton and municipality, or withholding tax for those subject to it.
All calculations run in your browser: nothing you enter is sent or stored.
Our sources
- Federal Tax Administration (FTA): direct federal tax and withholding tax scales.
- Federal Social Insurance Office (FSIO): AHV/IV/EO and unemployment rates, BVG parameters.
- Federal Statistical Office (FSO): reference salaries.
- Cantonal tax administrations: cantonal scales and municipal multipliers.
Updates
- Social insurance rates and BVG parameters are reviewed every year as soon as the FSIO publishes them.
- Federal and cantonal tax scales are reviewed for each new tax year.
- Every page shows, at the top and the bottom, the real date of its last change.
Limits of the estimate
Our calculators give an estimate for guidance only. Your actual payslip depends on your pension fund's rules, your employer's accident insurance rate and your full tax situation (deductions, assets, other income). If in doubt, the tax authority's assessment prevails.
