Quick Check: How Much Could You Save with Pillar 3a?

Enter your estimated marginal tax rate to see how much a maximum Pillar 3a contribution saves annually.

salairenet.ch provides free, accurate and privacy-first tax and financial calculators built specifically for the Swiss market. Our tools help more than 100 000 users each month understand their payslips, plan their budgets and make informed financial decisions in one of the world's most complex tax environments.

Why We Built This

The idea for salairenet.ch was born from a deeply personal frustration. When you move to Switzerland from another country, the financial learning curve is steep and unforgiving. The three-tier tax system (federal, cantonal, municipal), the mandatory social insurance contributions (AHV, ALV, AANP, BVG), the separate health insurance payments, the concept of Eigenmietwert for homeowners, the Pillar 3a tax deduction that nobody tells you about until you have already missed a year of contributions: the system is labyrinthine by design, and navigating it without specialized knowledge means leaving money on the table.

Most existing tools at the time were either in German only, used outdated tax data, required registration or sent your salary data to external servers. We wanted something different: a set of calculators that are free, multilingual, privacy-respecting and built on current official data from the Federal Tax Administration (ESTV), the Federal Social Insurance Office (BSV) and cantonal tax authorities.

The Swiss tax system, with 26 different cantonal tax schedules, approximately 2 000 unique municipal tax multipliers (Steuerfusse) and age-dependent social contribution rates, requires a computational approach rather than simple lookup tables. Every calculation on salairenet.ch models the full complexity: from the progressive federal tax brackets through the cantonal and municipal layers down to the BVG coordination deduction and ALV salary ceiling. The result is an accurate net salary figure that you can compare directly against your payslip.

Our Mission

We believe that financial transparency is a right, not a privilege. Every worker in Switzerland, regardless of nationality, language or financial literacy level, should be able to understand exactly how their gross salary becomes their net pay. They should be able to evaluate job offers across cantons, compare the true cost of different cities and plan for retirement with reliable projections.

This is especially important for the more than 2.2 million foreign nationals living in Switzerland (roughly 26% of the resident population) and the nearly 400 000 cross-border commuters. These individuals face additional complexity: withholding tax (Quellensteuer) instead of regular taxation, bilateral social security agreements, pension capital withdrawal rules that differ depending on where you move next, and a health insurance system that has no equivalent in most other countries.

Our English-language content is not a translation of our German or French material. Each language version is written independently, with unique angles, examples and explanations tailored to the specific audience. The English version targets expats and international workers who need context and comparisons that native Swiss residents would not require.

Mottalib Radif

MBA INSEAD, Begeistert von Schweizer Finanzplanung, MBA INSEAD

salairenet.ch was created by Mottalib Radif, who holds an MBA from INSEAD and has spent years working across international finance and technology. Having relocated between multiple countries, he experienced firsthand the challenge of understanding a new country's payroll system from scratch. In Switzerland, where the difference between the cheapest and most expensive canton can amount to CHF 10 000 per year in taxes on the same salary, getting it wrong is costly.

The project started as a personal spreadsheet that grew into a set of validated calculators. Today, salairenet.ch is used by individual employees, HR departments at Swiss companies, relocation agencies, tax advisors and financial planners. The tax data is updated annually, typically in January, as soon as the Federal Tax Administration and cantonal tax authorities publish the new rates and parameters.

How Our Calculators Work

Every calculator on salairenet.ch runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No salary data, personal information or calculation inputs are ever sent to our servers. This architecture was a deliberate choice. Salary information is among the most sensitive personal data, and we do not want to be in the position of collecting, storing or processing it. You can verify this yourself by using your browser's developer tools to monitor network requests while using any calculator: you will see that no data leaves your device.

The calculation engine incorporates:

  • Federal direct tax (direkte Bundessteuer): Full progressive rate schedule from the FTA, covering all income brackets and filing statuses (single, married, single with children).
  • Cantonal income tax: Individual rate schedules for all 26 cantons, including cantonal-specific deductions (professional expenses, insurance deductions, child deductions, etc.).
  • Municipal tax: The Steuerfuss (tax multiplier) for every municipality in Switzerland. These multipliers are updated annually as communes set their budgets.
  • Social insurance contributions: AHV/IV/EO (5.3%), ALV (1.1% up to CHF 148 200), AANP (variable, default 1.6%), and BVG with age-dependent rates on the coordinated salary.
  • Withholding tax (Quellensteuer): Full tariff schedules (A through H) for foreign employees without C permits, with cantonal variations.
  • Church tax: Optional, with correct rates for each canton that levies it.

Data Sources and Quality Assurance

The quality of a salary calculator is only as good as the data behind it. We source all data exclusively from official Swiss government authorities:

Our quality assurance process involves systematically comparing our calculation results against the official cantonal online tax calculators for multiple income levels, civil statuses, municipalities and family configurations. This validation is performed after each annual data update, typically in January. We also cross-reference with the ESTV's own online tax calculator (the "Steuerrechner") and the AHV contribution tables.

Privacy Commitment

Your privacy is not a feature we bolt on after the fact. It is the foundation of our architecture. Here is what this means in practice:

  • All calculations happen in your browser. Zero data is sent to our servers.
  • We do not use tracking cookies for advertising purposes.
  • We do not sell, share or monetize user data because we do not collect it.
  • You do not need an account, email address or any personal information to use any calculator.
  • Our site works without JavaScript for basic content, though the calculators require it to function.

We believe this is how financial tools should work. Your salary is your business.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Tools

How often are the tax rates updated?

We update all tax data annually, typically within the first two weeks of January, as soon as the Federal Tax Administration publishes the new rate schedules and the cantonal tax authorities confirm their municipal Steuerfusse. For 2026, the update was completed in January 2026 and includes all changes from the AHV21 reform, updated BVG parameters (coordination deduction, entry threshold, maximum insured salary) and revised ALV salary ceilings.

Can I trust these calculations for my actual tax return?

Our calculators provide highly accurate estimates, but they are estimates. The Swiss tax system allows for numerous individual deductions (professional expenses, commuting costs, childcare, health costs, charitable donations, interest on savings, etc.) that vary by canton and personal circumstances. Our calculations use standard deductions where applicable. For filing your actual tax return, we recommend using the official cantonal tax software (available free from every cantonal tax authority) or engaging a tax advisor, particularly for your first Swiss tax filing.

Do you cover the withholding tax (Quellensteuer) for expats?

Yes. Our gross-to-net calculator includes the option to calculate under the withholding tax regime, which applies to foreign employees without a C settlement permit. The calculator implements the full A through H tariff schedules for all 26 cantons, accounting for marital status, number of children and income level. Since the January 2021 reform, employees earning over CHF 120 000 per year must additionally file a regular tax return, and our calculations reflect this threshold.

Why do some results differ slightly from my actual payslip?

Small differences (typically less than 1% to 2%) can occur for several reasons. The most common is that your employer's pension fund may have different BVG parameters than the legal minimums we use (lower coordination deduction, higher contribution rates, different employer/employee split). Additionally, some employers calculate AANP premiums at sector-specific rates that differ from our default assumption. Payroll systems also handle rounding differently. If you notice a significant discrepancy, please contact us so we can investigate.

Our tools are designed to give your candidates realistic expectations before they arrive in Switzerland. Accuracy Disclaimer

salairenet.ch provides informational tools for educational purposes. Our calculators are designed to give accurate estimates based on official published data, but they do not constitute tax advice, financial advice or legal counsel. The actual tax burden can depend on numerous individual factors that an online calculator cannot fully capture: specific deductions for professional expenses, childcare costs, medical expenses, investment income, foreign-source income, double taxation treaty provisions and more. For binding tax assessments, consult a licensed Swiss tax advisor (Steuerberater) or your cantonal tax authority.
